À peine issue du latin, au IXe siècle, la langue française fut écrite, dans un contexte éminent et à des fins politiques (Serments de Strasbourg, 842); c'est singulièrement tôt. Un petit-fils de Charlemagne, prince diplomate, guerrier latiniste, eut l'idée de son usage écrit; Nithard est l'inventeur de la langue française. Il en fut aussi le premier écrivain: la littérature en français est née de son chagrin. L'essor du français et de ses Lettres doit donc beaucoup à Nithard, envers qui les siècles se sont montrés ingrats avec constance. Au terme d'un road movie carolingien, le lecteur saura pourquoi.
